out and shall enjoy covering very much. joining us for this big primary night is chris matthews, host of "hardball." and lawrence o'donnell. the host of the soon to debut last word with lawrence o'donnell. thanks. i really appreciate it. let me ask you this. you think no question the republican party finds a by to fall in love with her and get behind her? >> they have to. i already saw a letter from the senate republican campaign committee. they've already gotten excited about her. they are going to do what they have to do. i think you pointed out rather correctly, you notice the fact that the defeated republican candidate didn't endorse her tonight. so that bit of fence mending has yet to be done and it may not be done. i would have been shocked if she had gotten 40% tonight. up until late today, in fact, well into the evening, the establishment types from delaware were saying, this isn't going to happen. this is a shattering upset. there is no doubt about it. nobody expected it. they were talking 60% for castle late this afternoon. they assumed they had her well in hand. and look wh

of republican presidential nominee john mccain, will be joining us live here in studio this hour. we arl very, very much looking forward to that on the interview tonight. it is all ahead. >>> but we begin with what is known in american politics as a soft target. >> think about what happens if we don't pass this bill. thinking about what happens to your friends, your neighbors, your contact i ask all of you. what is in the best interest of our country? not what is in the best interest of our party, not what is in the best interest of our own re-election. what is in theรง best interest our country? vote yes. >> that was the top republican in the house john boehner getting emotional, getting choked up while speaking on the house floor. keep that in mind as you watch this. the newly unveiled first campaign ad of the season from the national republican congressional committee is an ad that targets a democratic congressman named joe donnelly from indiana. it appears to be their template ad so you should watch what they're attacking the democrat here for. >> joe donnelly claims he is independent. b

'll just keep doing it in the halls. >> okay, great. >> cheers. thanks to you at home for staying with us for the next hour as well. we do have a lot more ahead about don't ask, don't tell, lady gaga, the big day tomorrow, and the wrench that senator john mccain is so lustily throwing into the works on this issue. a report from the scene of today's rally with u.s. air force major mike elmi, and from capitol hill on what could be another filibuster eve. and there are two big reasons why thursday is a day to mark on your electoral calendar. it should favor democrats and howard dean will help us explain. that's all to come. >>> but first, when a political candidate comes from outside mainstream politics and that candidate gets nominated to represent a major party, and part of that candidate's appeal is that they come from outside mainstream politics, there's now a well-established process of making that candidate over, subtly, to make them seem more mainstreamy for the general election. we saw that process in action with the post-primary scrubbing of republican senate candidate, sharron angl

that he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us. >> iraq's weapons of mass destruction are controlled by a murderous tyrant, who has already used chemical weapons to kill thousands of people. >> we know he's been absolutely devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons. >> saddam hussein has and is amassing weapons of mass destruction to use against america. that, of course, turned out to be bullpucky as well. leading bush administration war proponent paul wolfowitz conceded later that it was mostly for political convenience that the bush administration decided to go with the whole w.m.d. argument in the early stages of the war. speaking from the white house briefing room on april 10th, 2003, press secretary ari fleischer said this. make to mistake, as i said earlier, we have high confidence that they have weapons of mass destruction. that is what this war was about and is about. no, it isn't. and no, it wasn't. ever. once the war was well under way, even the administration was forced to concede, reluctantly, that there weren't weapons of mass destruc

. her previous campaign manager has come out and said she just used the campaign money to pay her own rent which is not legal use of campaign money. i think she will try to just brush that story aside as the typical cross fire that any politician gets into, and try to find her way to the middle on some of these policy questions. >> but in 49 days, how much nondamage can she do to herself when as rachel maddow showed these tapes from mtv, there are tapes in which a candidate for senate for the use, which is what she is now, is discussing openly how people shouldn't masturbate? that would seem to be a difficult sell even in delaware. >> she's going to say it's 14 years ago and she is going to try to not get into repeating those specifics that she got into on that tape. and try to say something that sounds, indicate religiously high minded. that is kind of general. and saying no one should press me on these issues. she may take what she took into a punish you've and now try to play it as a personal issue that should not be questioned. >>> >> 30 seconds, it's a speight impression. does sh

, senator. >> major mike almy joins us live. >>> and the senator standing for reelection by write-in scores a sad own goal against her own campaign. "the rachel maddow show" starts right now. >>> today in the united states senate, language in the defense authorization bill that would let the military "don't ask, don't tell" fell to defeat. senate republicans, in fact, took the historic step of filibustering the entire defense authorization bill in order to maintain the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. they would not even allow debate on the defense bill because it included that language to let the military repeal its own policy on keeping gay people out of the military. and so we don't have a bill to fund the military this year. at least so far. and the "don't ask, don't tell" policy lives. what happens next? well, here is a clue. when i interviewed vice president joe biden less than a week ago, i asked him why if the administration was so opposed to "don't ask, don't tell," why were they still implementing it? why were they still discharging openly gay members of the u.s. military now that

to you at home for staying with us for the next hour as well. how about a bit of big breaking news? late on a friday. a federal judge appointed by president george w. bush in 2002 has issued a federal court ruling late today, essentially dismantling the don't ask, don't tell policy. this is the second very strong federal court ruling against the military's gay ban in less than a month. the plaintiff in this case has not done a national tv interview before. she'll be joining us in just a moment for an exclusive discussion along with someone whose face will be familiar to those of you following our coverage of this issue over the last seven weeks or so. excuse me, over the last year or so. the last seven weeks or so have been an unbelievably good seven weeks for gay rights in america. at least on paper. the proposition that removed existing same sex marriage rights after couples had already been married in california, the prop eight case, prop eight struck down as unconstitutional seven weeks ago. two weeks ago, don't ask, don't tell struck down in its totality as unconstitutional by a fed
